New Haven, Conn. (2/25/13) – The Lions' and the Tigers' women's lacrosse teams have been tabbed as top teams in the latest Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference's (CACC) preseason poll. Holy Family was the choice to finish first in the CACC South Division, while Georgian Court was picked to finish atop the CACC North in 2013 as voted on by the Conference's eight head coaches.
The 2013 season marks the first season women's lacrosse has been split into divisions since becoming a conference sport in 2009. Dominican College, Georgian Court University, Post University and Nyack College compose the North Division while Holy Family University, Wilmington University, Philadelphia University and Chestnut Hill College make up the South Division.
Georgian Court picked up three first-place votes and the right to the top ranking in the CACC North this season. The Lions, a two-time CACC Champion and a second-seed in last season's championship, defeated Philadelphia 17-10 in the 2012 CACC Semifinal to earn the right to take on Holy Family in the Championship game. Georgian Court eventually fell to the Tigers, 15-10, ending their season.
After finishing the 2012 regular season fifth, and missing out on postseason play, Dominican College was picked to finish second in the CACC North. The Chargers, who closed out last season with a 6-9-0 regular season record and a 6-6 record in the CACC, picked up one first-place vote and three second place votes to earn 13 points.
Rounding out the North Division is Post University in third and first-year program, Nyack College in fourth.
Holy Family, the 2012 CACC Champions, picked up 13 points and three first-place votes to begin 2013 as the team to beat in the CACC South Division. The Tigers, a top seed in last season's championship, took down Georgian Court to prevent the Lions from taking their third CACC Championship and earned their first CACC Championship in the process.
Wilmington was tabbed to finish second in the South, picking up 11 points while Philadelphia and Chestnut Hill rounded out the DIvision with nine points and seven points, respectively.
