WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY EDGES WOMEN'S LACROSSE

New Castle, DE (4/21/12)  The Wilmington University Wildcats completed the season series sweep after defeating the visiting Lady Chargers of Dominican College, 16-15, this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action.  With the loss, Dominican falls to 5-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play.

Sophomore KC Jentzen (Pearl River, NY) led the offense for the Lady Chargers with five goals on the day.  Traci-Joan Muniz (Middlesex, NJ) and freshman Allison Smithwick (Commack, NY) each recorded two goals in the loss with Smithwick adding two assists.

Jentzen started off the scoring with her 29th goal of the season just over a minute and a half into the contest.  A WU goal tied the game and the Lady Chargers went on a 3-0 run with goals by Muniz, senior Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ) and midfielder Lauren Arnone (Neptune City, NJ) to claim a 4-1 advantage. 

A second Wildcat goal broke the Lady Charger run, but the answered back with another three unanswered goals to pull ahead, 7-2.  Jentzen, Smithwick and junior Elizabeth Schmidt (Montgomery, NY) all recorded a goal with Smithwick adding an assist.

Wilmington closed out first half play, outscoring the Lady Chargers 5-1 to cut the DC lead to 8-7 at the intermission.

The 'Cats scored the second half's first goal to tie the game at 8-8, but Smithwick regained the lead for Dominican, 9-8 with her team leading 35th goal of the season with 26:14 to play.  From there, WU went on a 5-3 run to go ahead 13-12 with 12:30 to play. 

Dominican came back with three consecutive goals with two from Jentzen and one from Ariana Tharrington (Red Bank, NJ) with assists credited to Muniz and Smithwick to re-claim a 15-13 lead.  Wilmington closed out the game with a 3-0 run for the 16-15 win.

Goalie Veronica Iozzi (Chester, NJ) made seven saves in the loss.

Dominican is back in action on Wednesday when they host Post University at the DC Lacrosse Field.
