2009-2010 Dominican College Women's Basketball Season Preview
The 2009-2010 Dominican College women's basketball team is coming off another successful season in 2008-2009 after capturing their second consecutive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division Championship. Last season the Lady Chargers finished with an overall record of 17-12 and a CACC record of 13-4.
After winning the regular season North Title, DC was given the top seed in the North Division in the CACC Tournament. In the quarter-finals, DC squared off against #4 Warriors of Nyack College and game away with the 71-61 victory. In the semi-finals, Dominican faced the #2 of the south division, Wildcats of Wilmington University, and ended their season with a 64-55 loss.
The Lady Chargers return nine players and two starters in 09-10 as returning captain Adele Laskowski and captain Shanice Scully look to guide the team in this season's campaign.
Head coach, John Burke, who enters his ninth season at the helm of the Lady Chargers will utilize an up-tempo style of play this season as he will rely on pressure defense and a strong shooting presence from the three point line.
The point guard position sees the return of one player from last season's squad, Scully, who should win the starting role. Scully is an outstanding defender on the ball and provides the Lady Chargers with instant quickness. Backing her up will be two freshmen Shannon Lavelle and Schae Auffant. Lavelle, a consistent three-point shooter will see significant minutes this season as she has great court awareness and leadership abilities. Auffant is a hard working and tough competitor who will provide depth at the point guard position.
Sophomore Kaity Lent returns and will move over to the second guard spot this season. Lent started all 29 games last season and averaged 6.8 ppg for a solid freshman season and should get the starting spot. Freshman Lindsey Lopez will see significant playing time at two spot as she possesses excellent passing skills and is a threat from beyond the three point arc. Fellow rookie Chelsea Aronica and returner Kristen Haycook round out the second guard spot. Aronica has outstanding offensive skills, while Haycook makes smart decisions on the floor. Both will be assets off the bench.
Senior Rachelle Sainten returns at the third guard spot after averaging 7.0 ppg in 29 games last year. Sainten has had a great pre-season and will be counted on to be a strong presence on the floor. Backing her up are sophomore Meghan Murphy and newcomer Ayris Brown. Murphy saw action in 28 games in 08-09 and provides instant offense when she is on the court. Brown is an athletic and hard-working player with strong defensive skills.
Laskowski returns to start at the forward position after a strong junior year. In 08-09 she finished second on the team with 14.4 ppg and third with 5.0 rpg after starting all 29 games. She was ranked 9th in the CACC in scoring and 7th in steals (55) and 9th in three point field goals made (46). Laskowski recorded her 1,000th career point in a 71-55 victory over Goldey-Beacom College and now has over 1,200 career points. For her efforts, she was named to the All-CACC Second Team and the All-Met Second Team. Coming off the bench will be sophomore Marley Klunk. Klunk, a strong offensive player, is a threat both inside and outside the hoop.
The post position will feature the return of junior Jasmine Schinella. Schinella, who suffered a season ending injury half way through last season, is tough under the basket and has great athleticism on the floor. Sophomore Samantha Klunk will also see significant time in the post spot. Possessing great passing skills and a scoring threat, Klunk will provide offense off the bench. Rounding out the post position is freshman Bianca Harris. Harris is an athletic and strong rebounder with great hands who has a bright future with the Lady Chargers.
The Lady Chargers open up the season with a non-conference contest at the University of New Haven on November 15th. The team then will take part in the Nyack College Tip-Off Tournament on November 20th and 21st.
