TOP SEEDED LADY CHARGERS BASKETBALL FALL TO FOURTH SEEDED WILMINGTON COLLEGE WILDCATS

Philadelphia, PA (3/6/09) The top seeded Dominican College Lady Chargers basketball team fell to the fourth seeded Wilmington College Wildcats, 64-55 this afternoon in the semi-finals of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Women's Basketball Tournament hosted by Philadelphia University.
Wilmington (18-11) held Dominican to 30.5-percent (18-59) shooting, including 17.2-percent (5-29) from three-point range en route to its first-ever CACC Championship game appearance. The Wildcats upset the tournament's overall number one seed, Holy Family University, on Tuesday. Dominican, the North No. 1 seed, hit only one of its first 13 tries from beyond the arc as Wilmington built a lead of as many as 13 (25-12) toward the end of the first 20 minutes of play.
After leading 27-15 at the break, the Wildcats extended their lead to 17 (37-20) during the first five minutes of the second stanza after a triple by Jamie Gallagher (Morton, PA). The Chargers (17-12) chipped away and got within seven twice in the final minute, but could not get any closer. Four players reached double-figures in scoring for Wilmington, including a 16-point performance from junior guard Kim Parker (New Castle, DE). Senior forward Jillian Bennett( (Maple Shade, NJ) notched a double-double with 11 points and 15 boards, while junior forward Amelia Simmons (Wilmington, DE) contributed 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Dominican was led by a huge effort from senior guard Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY), who poured in a game-high 31 points to go with 10 rebounds. She shot 9-for-20 from the field and 13-for-15 from the charity stripe. Her teammates combined to shoot 9-for-39 from the field. Senior center Shalissa Burgess (Englewood, NJ) also had 10 boards and six points, while guard Rachelle Sainten (Spring Valley, NY) nine points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Wilmington improves to 18-11 overall and advances to the CACC Championship game where they will face #2 Philadelphia University tomorrow afternoon at 4pm. Dominican falls to 17-12 on the year.
