New Castle, DE (1/8/08) The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University were edged by the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 64-60 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference women’s basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Center.
Dominican controlled the balance of play for much of the first period, before a late run in the closing minute, spurred by two three-pointers from Wilmington’s Jamie Gallagher, put the ‘Cats back in the game. Wilmington started the second half with a 16-4 lead, and eventually went up by as many as eight (54-46) with 9:40 remaining. The Chargers began chipping away at the Wildcat lead, and tied the game at 60 with 1:52 left. From there on out, Dominican held the Wildcats scoreless and hit a few clutch free throws to come away with the victory.
Wilmington was led by sophomore Amelia Simmons who posted a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Sherrelle Holmes added 11 points and five assists, while classmate Nordia Henry chipped in with seven points and nine boards.
Dominican was paced by Althea Chambers (Yonkers,
NY), who netted 13 points and 11 rebounds.
Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) added 13 points and five
steals, while Adele Laskowski (Wayne, NJ) had 13
points. Shalissa Burgess (Englewood, NJ)
notched eight points, seven boards, and three blocks for the
Chargers.
Wilmington out-shot the Chargers, as the Wildcats shot 41 percent from the floor, compared to almost 35 percent from the visitors. Dominican held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding the hosts by a 42-39 margin, but the difference in the game was the 21 turnovers the Chargers forced, and were able to turn into 23 points.
Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-2 in the CACC and 8-5 overall, while Dominican improved to 3-1 in the conference and 9-3 on the season.
The Lady Chargers are back in action on
Thursday when they host Caldwell College. Game time is
6pm.
