Lakewood, NJ – Dominican College used a strong first half
defensive performance, then held off a Georgian Court University
comeback attempt, to beat the Lions 59-50, in Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference play. Dominican improved to 15-10
overall and 13-7 in the CACC, snapping a three-game losing streak.
The Lions, having lost their third straight, fell to 6-18,
5-16, respectively.
Holding a modest one point lead just three minutes in, Dominican
used a 12-2 run to extend to an early 18-7 lead, sparked by a trio
of baskets from senior Ashley Rossi (Greenwood Lake,
NY). Dominican ended the half on a similar 12-5 run,
steadying to a comfortable 30-14 lead at intermission. In the
process, the Chargers held the Lions to just 25% from the field
(6-24), forcing 17 turnovers in the process.
GCU. however, did not go quietly, mounting an impressive second
half comeback. The Lions started the half on a 6-0 run, then
used a 10-2 run to cut the Dominican lead to just 37-32 with 10:45
remaining. However, that proved to be as close as the Lions
would get. A lay-up by DC’s Jacklyn Tracey
(Bronx, NY) extended the lead to double-digits
at the 6:11 mark, and when GCU responded, another running lay-up by
Dana Rotio (Garfield, NJ) put the Chargers up
for good.
Rossi finished with a game-high 21 points for
Dominican, while Rotio chimed in with 15 points
and a team-high 7 rebounds. Stephanie Longo
led all Lions scorers with 14 markers, while
Lobbato finished with 13. GCU’s
Barbara Jones led all scorers with 10
rebounds.
The Lady Chargers are back in action on Thursday, February 16th
when they host Holy Family University at 6pm.
