BLOOMFIELD AND GEORGIAN COURT PICKED FIRST IN CACC PRESEASON VOLLEYBALL POLL
New Haven, CT (8/21/08) Bloomfield College and Georgian Court University were selected to win their respective divisions for the second consecutive season as the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) volleyball preseason poll was released today. Bloomfield was a unanimous pick to win the North Division with 78 points. Georgian Court picked up 90 points to top the South Division, while being chosen first on 12 of 13 ballots. The 13 head coaches conducted the voting.
Georgian Court finished 30-9 overall last season and went 18-0 in CACC play to win the South Division championship. The Lions went on to win the CACC Tournament with a 3-1 triumph over Holy Family University en route to participating in the NCAA Division II Northeast Region Tournament for the second straight season. The squad welcomes back five starters and will be led by two-time CACC Player of the Year, Ann Casado. Also back is first team All-Conference middle blocker, Crystal Murdock. The Lions will be guided by 2007 CACC Co-Coach of the Year, Francisco Casado.
Holy Family was picked second in the South Division with 70 total points after playing for the CACC championship last season. The Tigers went 18-21 overall and 14-4 in conference action. Holy Family returns two All-CACC players in first team outside hitter, Jen O'Connor and second team setter, Aimee Drabyn. Head Coach Sue Kilian was the 2007 CACC Co-Coach of the Year.
Philadelphia University, which lost only one starter from last year's squad, was picked first in one poll and finished third with 66 total points. The Lady Rams compiled a 15-3 conference record last season and went 22-15 overall. Wilmington University (51), University of the Sciences in Philadelphia (45), Goldey-Beacom College (28) and Chestnut Hill College (14) rounded out the South Division poll.
Bloomfield was a unanimous choice to win the North Division with 13 first-place votes. The Deacons captured the North regular-season title last season by going 14-3 in conference play and 18-16 overall. Bloomfield will be led by three returning All-CACC performers, including first team middle blocker Ursula Pereira and second team picks, Celeste Lindsay and Sonia Perez.
Post was picked second in the North Division with 49 total points. The Eagles tied for second in the division last season with an 8-9 record to go with a 9-24 overall mark. Post return senior captain Kerry Smith, who was second-team All-CACC and an All-Tournament Team selection a year ago.
Felician was selected third and went 6-11 in conference play and 6-23 overall in 2007. Record setting libero Erica Moore will be converted to outside hitter joining fellow sophomore Amber Doran, but sophomore Leanne Sleboda returns to the back row. Nyack was picked fourth in the division (40), Dominican fifth (32) and Caldwell finished sixth (31).
