2011 Dominican College Women’s Track and Field Season Summary
The Lady Chargers participated in eight meets in the 2011 spring season, which doubled the amount that they attended in 2010. There were no team scores, however the roster featured nine participants that ran a variety of events.
Junior Samantha Klunk had the highest finish of the season as she took third place in the difficult 3000 meter steeple chase at the Roadrunner Invitational. She had top ten finishes all four times she participated in the steeple chase. For her efforts, Klunk was named the Most Valuable Player for women’s track at Awards Night.
Sarah Dugandzic earned the Coach’s Award and was named the DC Top Female Junior Scholar-Athlete. She had a high finish of 12th in heat two and 24th overall in the one mile run at the NYRR Saturday Night at the Armory III and took 18th place in the 1500 meter run at the Roadrunner Invitational.
Sophomore Keyla Cruz had the high finish of 11th place in the 800 meter run at the 2011 West Point Open. Rookie Desiree Roberts became the first Lady Charger to compete in a field event where she took 23rd place in the women’s shot put at the 2011 Monmouth Season Opener.
Freshman Amanda Castro her highest finish of 18th place in the 800 meter run at the Richard Stockton Invitational, while Michelle Brito had a 19th place finish in the 200 meter dash at the West Point Open. Teammate Sharrika Brent took a team best 18th place finish in the 200 meter dash in the final meet of the season at the Yale Springtime Invitational.
As the team finished up their second full season of competition in 2011, Head Coach Abdias Suero was extremely pleased with the performance of the team. As he looks to bring in a talented recruiting class, he will rely on the experience of the returners to guide the team to a successful 2012 season.
