2012-13 Dominican College Softball Season Summary
The 2013 Dominican College Lady Chargers softball team had another very successful season under head coach Joe Burbridge. The team finished the season with an overall record of 32-22 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 25-1. DC won the regular season CACC Title and thus was the top seed in the CACC Tournament. The Lady Chargers were also in the NCAA East Region Rankings all season.
The Lady Chargers were the top seed in the CACC Tournament and won their first two games against #8 Philadelphia University, 9-5, and #4 Georgian Court University, 8-7. In day two action, DC fell to #2 Caldwell College, 5-3, and were eliminated by Georgian Court, 7-1.
Dominican went on to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA East Regional Tournament, thus making their fifth consecutive NCAA East Regional appearance.
DC earned the eighth seed in the NCAA East 1 Regional Tournament, hosted by the top-seeded Pioneers of LIU Post. In opening round action, the Lady Chargers faced the Pioneers and suffered a tough, 7-6, loss. In an elimination contest, the Lady Chargers fell to the University of New Haven, 2-0 to end their season.
Freshman Kimberly Ragazzo was a two-way standout during her freshman campaign. Ragazzo batted .364, while leading DC in RBI (53) and runs (49). Ragazzo also made 22 appearances on the mound, including 7 complete games and a shutout, to post a 2.62 era in conference play. She was named the CACC Rookie of the Year and to the First Team, the NFCA All-East Region First Team, the Daktronics All-East Region First Team, was selected as the ECAC Rookie of the Year and as an ECAC All-Star.
Senior Julie Plante also had a great season. She played in every game this season and broke the school's all-time hit record this year. She ranked third in the conference in hits and RBIs, fourth in doubles, fifth in runs scored and seventh in batting average and home runs. For her efforts, she was named to the All-CACC First Team for the third time in her career, made her second straight appearance on the NFCA All-East Region Second Team and was named to the Daktronics All-East Region Second Team. Plante also earned her second consecutive Capital One Academic All-District First Team for honors and was selected to the Capital One Academic All-America Division II Softball First Team.
Senior outfielder/pitcher Delaney Childers led the Lady Chargers on the mound and contributed at the plate. She ranked fourth in the CACC in home runs, seventh in runs scored, ninth in slugging percentage, 12th in hits and is in the top 25 in batting average. On the mound, she led the conference in games started, ranked second in shut outs, innings pitched, innings pitched and was third in wins. She earned her third straight All-CACC First Team honors and was named to the Daktronics All-East Region Second Team for the third time in her career.
Junior Paige Berzak also earned All-CACC First Team accolades, along with teammate Shannon Haukap. Berzak ranked 13th in the CACC in RBIs, 10th in on-base percentage and 16th in batting average. Berzak also was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District Softball First Team. Haukap was second in the conference in home runs and slugging percentage, fifth in batting average, sixth in runs scored, seventh in RBIs and on-base percentage, 13th in hits and 14th in doubles. Haukap was also selected to the NFCA All-Region East Second Team.
Senior Catcher Ashley Corrao led the conference in walks and on-base percentage, was seventh in home runs, 11th in runs scored and slugging percentage, 13th in RBIs, 14th in doubles and batting average. She received All-CACC Second Team accolades.
The Lady Chargers graduate six seniors this season: Plante, Childers, Corrao, Kathryn Coles, Brielle Kerscher and Victoria LaPorte. All were vital members of the Lady Charger softball squad for four years, winning three CACC Tournament Titles and making four appearances at the NCAA East Regionals.
