SOFTBALL ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH SPLIT AGAINST PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (4/21/12) The Dominican College softball team ended regular season play with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) split with the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. The Rams held on for a 6-5 lead in game one, while the Lady Chargers rallied to win game two, 7-6 as the team celebrated Senior Day.
Orangeburg, NY (4/21/12) The Dominican College softball team ended regular season play with a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) split with the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University this afternoon at the DC Softball Field. The Rams held on for a 6-5 lead in game one, while the Lady Chargers rallied to win game two, 7-6 as the team celebrated Senior Day.
Game One: The Rams held a 1-0 lead when Dominican answered back with a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single up-the-middle off the bat of catcher Ashley Corrao (Staten Island, NY) to tie the game at 1-1.
The Rams came back with two runs in the fourth to go up 3-1, but the Lady Chargers got a run back in the bottom stanza on the RBI ground out from Julie Plante* (Swansea, MA). Philadelphia came back with a three run fifth inning to pull head 6-2, but a Shelby Wassmann (Loudoun, VA) two-run homer over the left center field fence made the score 6-4.
In the seventh, junior Kathryn Coles (Farmville, VA) hit a two out RBI single to center field for the final 6-5 score.
Corrao and Wassmann each had three hits in the game.
Delaney Childers (Johnstown, OH) suffered the complete game loss (19-7), allowing six runs one nine hits and six strikeouts.
Game Two: The Rams again held a 1-0 lead when Dominican tied the score in the second as senior Deidre Jeppson* (Sylmar, CA) reached base on an error which brought home a run. The Lady Chargers took a 2-1 lead in the fourth as Plante hit an RBI double.
Philadelphia put two runs on the board in the fifth, but Dominican answered right back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-run single from left fielder Victoria LaPorte (Washingtonville, NY) to re-claim a 4-3 lead.
A three-run homer by the Rams in the sixth put them out in front, 6-3. In the bottom of the seventh, Coles hit a key two out infield single, followed by a walk to LaPorte to put two runners on. Senior Ashley Martinez* (Bloomfield, NJ) delivered a huge RBI single down the left field line to make the score 6-5. Plante then followed by reaching base on a Ram throwing error which allowed both LaPorte and Martinez to score for the 7-6 victory.
Senior Katrina Pistilli* (Staten Island, NY) improved to 14-8 with the complete game victory, allowing six runs on six hits and collecting eight strikeouts.
Plante and LaPorte each had two hits in game two.
With the split Dominican finishes the regular season with a 33-15 overall record and a CACC record of 24-2, thus winning the regular season CACC Title.
After the games, the team honored seniors Jeppson, Martinez and Pistilli.
Dominican is back in action this coming Thursday in the CACC Tournament being held at Georgian Court University.
