LADY CHARGERS SOFTBALL CRUISES PAST QUEENS COLLEGE

Orangeburg, NY (4/13/09) The Dominican College softball team swept a non-conference double-header from host Queens College this afternoon in Flushing, NY. DC won the first game 11-0 in six innings and cruised to an 18-3 victory in game two.
In game one, Dominican broke a scoreless game open with a four-run second inning. Sophomore catcher Nicole Scarillo (Perth Amboy, NJ) led things off in the second with a solo home run. Freshman Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) followed later with a two-run single and junior Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA) had a two-out RBI single. DC added to the lead in the third as Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) had an RBI single to score first basemen Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) who hit a two-out triple.
Dominican had scored in the fifth and sixth innings as Ollari had an RBI single in the fifth and DC pounded out five more runs in the sixth to take a commanding 11-0 lead. Junior Jessica Martinieri (Tampa, FL) started things off with a two-run blast, while shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) later followed with an RBI single to right center field. Senior left fielder Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) rounded out the scoring with her first of three home runs on the day with a two home run.
Freshman Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) improved to 9-5 on the year with the shut-out win, scattering just five hits and collecting four strikeouts.
In game two, the Lady Chargers once again got on the board in the second as they took advantage of a QC error. DC continued on the offensive with a six-run fourth inning as Martinez and Philpot collected RBI singles and Beck had a two-out two-run homer to take a 5-0 lead.
Queens answered with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-3. Dominican answered back with three runs in the sixth as Beck hit her third homer of the day, Scarillo scored on a Queens error and Martinez hit a two-out RBI single to rebuild the DC lead to 8-3.
Dominican struck for eight runs in the seventh as they capitalized on four Knight errors. Kelli Rehm (Livingston, NJ), Deidre Jeppson (Sylmar, CA) and Beck all had RBI singles as DC cruised to the 18-3 victory.
Junior Laurie Edwards (Riverhead, NY) picked up the win (11-6) in four innings of work, allowing three runs on four hits and collecting five strikeouts.
With the victories Dominican improves to 21-12 overall.
