SOFTBALL SWEEPS HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY

Philadelphia, PA (3/24/09)  The Dominican College women's softball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from host Holy Family University this afternoon.  DC won the first game 8-1 in nine innings and took the night cap, 10-1 in five innings.

The Lady Chargers broke a scoreless game in the top of the third as freshman Ashley Martinez (Bloomfield, NJ) got a one out walk, stole second, went to third on a single by Nicole Philpot (Dingmans Ferry, PA) and scored on a fielding error by the Tigers to take a 1-0 lead.

The Tigers tied the game with a run in the fifth, which forced the game into extra innings where the Lady Chargers exploded for seven runs on five in the top of the ninth.  Senior Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ), junior Danielle Garrison (Coatesville, PA) all provdied RBI singles, while Philpot had a two run single.  An infield error by Holy Family allowed two more runs score as DC went on to the 8-1 victory.

Garrison got the complete game win to improve to 3-1 on the year, allowing one run on six hits, two walks and 10 strikeouts.

In game two, Dominican continued on the offensive tear opening up the game with a five run first inning.  Outfielder Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) had an RBI double and game into score on the two run double by Ollari.  A sacrifice fly by Garrison brought in the fourth run and a RBI double by Jessica Martinieri (Tampa, FL) put DC up 5-0.

DC added a run in the second on the RBI single by junior shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) to take a commanding 6-0 lead.  Holy Family put a run across in the bottom stanza to cut the lead to 6-1.

The Lady Chargers struck for three more runs in the fourth on a three run blast by Beck and scored the game's final run in the fifth on an RBI single by catcher Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) as Dominican got the 10-1 five inning victory.

Freshman Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) improved to 5-3 overall in the complete game win, allowing just one run on five hits.  Beck finished game two with four RBIs, while Philpot had four hits and Ollari finished with three hits and two RBIs.

With the sweep, Dominican improves to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the CACC.
