Dominican Softball Advances To Semi-Finals Of CACC Tournament

Caldwell, NJ (5/4/06)  The #2 Dominican College Lady Chargers advanced to the semi-final round of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament after defeating #3 Georgian Court University Lions, 6-2 this afternoon at Caldwell College.

Dominican took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Kristine Knuth (Staten Island, NY) singled to right to start the game.  She was sacrificed over to second by senior Katie Farrugia (Cornwall, NY) and came in to score on the RBI double to left field by CACC Rookie of the Year Sarah Beck (Milton, NY).

DC added two runs in the second as Michelle Krupna (Sparta, NJ) led off the inning with a double to left center and came in to score as the next batter Jamie Ollari (Hopatcong, NJ) tripled to left center.  With two outs, Knuth reached on a error by the short stop which allowed Ollari to score and give Dominican a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, CACC Pitcher of the Year, Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY) tripled to center field to start the inning and scored on the RBI single by Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY) who then advanced to second on a GCU error.  Krupna singled to center to score Terpstra to take a 4-0 lead.  Freshman Melanie Hestermann (Lacey Township, NJ) hit a two out RBI single to left field to score Krupna as DC held a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Chargers added a run in the bottom of the sixth as Farrugia led the inning off with a single to center and advanced to second on a throwing error.  Beck followed with her second double of the day to give DC a 6-0 lead.

GCU scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but it wouldn't be enough as DC came away with the 6-2 victory.

DC starter Michelle Bark (West Milford, NJ) improved to 13-5 on the year with the complete game win, striking out six batters.

With the win, the Lady Chargers improve to 36-15 on the year and advance to the semi-finals of the CACC Tournament where they will face #1 Caldwell College, who defeated #5 Bloomfield College 1-0 in 14 innings, tomorrow afternoon at 2pm in Caldwell, NJ.
