Lakewood, NJ – The Georgian Court University Lions softball team split a conference doubleheader today against rival Dominican College. The Lions got off on the right foot with a 3-1 win in game 1, but were denied the sweep as the Charger bats woke up in game 2 claiming a 13-5 win.
Georgian Court was led in game 1 by a strong pitching performance by freshman Samantha Sasko (Yardville, NJ), who went the whole way for the victory improving her record to 5-1 on the season. Sasko overpowered the Charger line up ringing up 9 strikeouts in her 7 innings of work. Offensively, the Lions were led by Rebecca Rhebergen (Hopewell, NJ), who reached base three times, and scored 2 runs in the game. Autumn Florez (Manchester, NJ) continued her hot hitting collecting two more base hits raising her batting average to .438.
In the nightcap, the Dominican offense struck early and often putting a 3 spot on the board before the Lions even came to bat. GCU answered quickly in the second when Julie Sito (Elyria,OH) led off with a walk, was advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and eventually scored on a Stacey Ryan (Brick, NJ) single. The Chargers stretched their lead in the third behind a 3 run blast off the bat of Michelle Krupna (Sparta, NJ). Dominican added to their lead with 1 in the fifth and 5 more in the sixth.
The Lions were able close the gap, scoring three times in the bottom half of the inning but it was not enough. The split leaves the Georgian Court at 10-4, 3-1 CACC while the Chargers went to 13-7, 3-3 CACC.
