DOMINICAN'S ARTEAGA NAMED CACC PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Wright Named CACC Rookie of the Year; Campbell Named Coach of the Year
New Haven, CT (10/29/07) Dominican College senior midfielder Jhonny Arteaga has garnered Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Men's Soccer Player of the Year accolades, as the All-Conference team was released today. Fellow Charger Joe Wright was named the Rookie of the Year, while Dominican Head Coach John Campbell was honored as the Coach of the Year. Nyack College was given the annual Team Sportsmanship Award. The conference's 10 head coaches conducted the voting for the awards.
Arteaga, who hails from Stamford, CT, led the CACC in
points (38), goals (16) and game-winning goals (six) this season
and also ranked second with six assists. He scored 12 more points
and four more goals than anyone else in the conference in leading
Dominican to its fourth consecutive CACC regular-season
championship.
Wright, a sophomore forward from Stratford-Upon-Avon,
England, ranked seventh in the CACC in points (19), tied for fifth
in assists (5) and stood eighth in goals (7) this season.
Furthermore, he ranked first in the CACC in shots per-game with
4.07 (61 total in 15 games). He was also named to the
All-Conference first team.
Campbell led Dominican to the CACC regular-season
championship with an 8-0-1 conference record to go with an 11-2-5
overall mark. It was their fourth straight regular-season title and
the Chargers will be looking for their fourth consecutive CACC
Tournament Championship this week. Dominican entered the week
ranked fifth in the New England region.
Fiver other Chargers earned All-CACC honors along with Arteaga and Wright, seniors Robert Kelly (Kearny, NJ) and Joseph Ruesgen (Cambeltown, Scotland) earned All-CACC First Team honors. Fellow seniors Ryan Clancy (Pine Bush, NY) and Diego Miranda (Stamford, CT) earned All-CACC Second Team Accolades. Sophomore James Hamilton (Paisley, Scotland) also received All-CACC Second Team Honors. Dan Kelly (Massapequa, NY) received All-CACC Honorable Mention honors.
Kelly, who has been the starting keeper for three years,
has recorded eight shut outs this season and set a new record at
Dominican with 28 career shut outs. He currently ranks first
in the CACC in goals against average, save percentage and shut
outs. He was named to the All-CACC First Team and the All
CACC Tournament Team in 2005 and the Second Team in 2006. He
was also named to the Daktronics Division II All-New England Men's
Soccer Second Team and the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-District Second Team in 2006. Kelly has
been ranked the last two years in the nation in goals against
average.
Ruesgen, a pivotal member of the DC defense has also been
a starter for the last three years and a captain for the last two
seasons. He has started all 18 games for the Chargers this
season. He was named to the All-CACC First Team,
All-CACC Tournament Team, Daktronics Division II All-New England
Men's Soccer Second Team and the NSCAA/Adidas All-New England
Region Second Team in 2006 and to the Division II New England
Regional All-Tournament Team in 2005.
Clancy, a starting midfielder for the last four years, is
the other DC captain. He was a All-CACC First Team selection
the last two seniors and earned a spot on the Second Team as a
freshman. He is a two time CACC Tournament Most Valuable
Player and was named to the 2006 Division II Daktronics All-New
England Men's Soccer First Team. Clancy has
also been named to the (NSCAA)/Adidas Division II All-New
England Region Team for the last three years.
Miranda makes his second appearance on the All-CACC Team
after receiving First Team honors last year. He has played in
17 games this season as a midfielder and helps control the Charger
offense.
Hamilton, a second year starter for the DC defense, has
one goal and two assists in 14 games since returning from an
injury. He has also converted one of two penalty kicks this
season.
