New Castle, DE (9/8/07) The Wildcats of Wilmington College were shut out by the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex. Wilmington entered the contest ranked ninth in the New England Region and the Chargers are currently ranked third.
Dominican jumped on the board in the 16th minute when Joseph Ruesgen (Campbeltown, Scotland) deflected a shot off the foot of Joe Wright (Stratford-Upon-Avon, NY) on a direct kick, past Wilmington keeper Dan Mangat. The two teams would battle it out for the remainder of the half, with Wilmington's best chance coming on a header by sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh. Tarpeh leaped over the Charger defender and headed the ball hard, but Dominican goalie Robert Kelly (Kearny, NJ) made a diving stop with his right hand and punched the ball away to preserve the one goal lead.
The Chargers added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to put the game away, as Wright headed a beautiful corner kick from Ryan Clancy (Pine Bush, NY). Dominican's defense kept the Wildcats at bay for the remainder of the game, and held on for the important conference victory.
Dominican out-shot the Wildcats by a 17-8 margin, and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. The two teams combined for 29 fouls, with Wilmington amassing 23 of the whistles, while both squads totaled 11 yellow cards in the match. Wilmington keeper, senior Dan Mangat recorded twelve saves in goal, while Robert Kelly notched three saves between the pipes for Dominican.
Following the game, the Wildcats dropped to 0-1 in the CACC and 3-2 on the season, while Dominican improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-0-3 on the year.
The Chargers are back in action on Monday when they travel to
Bryant University in a non-conference game scheduled to begin at
3pm.
