Mens Soccer: Doherty, Pietropinto Lead River Hawks Over No. 11 Dominican, 3-2
LOWELL, MA (8/30/06) Senior M Andrew Doherty (Malden, MA) and sophomore F Matias Pietropinto (Leominster, MA) each scored one goal and set up another while freshman G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) stopped a penalty kick in the final minutes to lead UMass Lowell over No. 11 Dominican College, 3-2, in a mens soccer clash Wednesday afternoon at Cushing Field.

Doherty, Pietropinto One Goal, Assist; Richards Stops Late Penalty Kick
LOWELL, MA (8/30/06) - Senior M Andrew Doherty (Malden, MA) and sophomore F Matias Pietropinto (Leominster, MA) each scored one goal and set up another while freshman G Ryan Richards (Holden, MA) stopped a penalty kick in the final minutes to lead UMass Lowell over No. 11 Dominican College, 3-2, in a men's soccer clash Wednesday afternoon at Cushing Field.
With the win, UML improved to 1-1 while Dominican slipped to 0-2-1. The River Hawks visit Saint Rose Saturday at 2:00 and return home next Wednesday to host New Haven (7:00).
UML overcame deficits of 0-1 and 1-2 and scored its first two goals on set pieces. The River Hawks snatched the lead for good in the 74th minute when Pietropinto picked up the rebound off a saved shot from Doherty and tucked it inside the far post from the left side.
Richards preserved the win when he dove to his left to parry a penalty kick by junior F Ryan Clancy (Pine Bush, NY). The Chargers were awarded the kick when a UML defender was whistled for a handball during a scramble in front of the net.
Dominican opened the scoring in the 21st minute when junior F Diego Miranda (Quito, Ecuador) settled a cross from junior M Jhonny Arteaga (Cali, Colombia) and tipped it past Richards.
UML evened up in the 33rd minute when Pietropinto steered a free kick from the left side, which was tipped by senior D Michael Cafeteiro (Dracut, MA) to Doherty who poked inside the left post.
Dominican stunned the River Hawks in the 58th when Clancy broke free between a pair of defenders and poked a shot by a charging Richards for a 2-1 lead. Arteaga set up the play with a volley from inside the half line.
UML capitalized on another set piece in the 58th when freshman D Jarred Goldstein (Weymouth, MA) sent a free kick to freshman F Jesse Arredondo (Salem, MA) who crossed to freshman F Brendan Horne (Swansea, MA) who tapped into an open net.
Dominican outshot UML 12-9 overall and 8-6 on target. Richards had six saves for his first collegiate win while senior G Robert Kelly (Kearny, NJ) stopped three shots.
