Dominican Chargers Lacrosse Upset #10 St. Michael’s College, 8-7

 

Blauvelt, NY (4/28/07)    The Dominican College men’s lacrosse team upset #10 St. Michael’s College, 8-7 this afternoon at the DC Lacrosse Field in a non-conference game.

Dominican trailed 4-1 at the end of the first quarter as the Purple Knights went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by two goals by Gregory Lazarus (Evanston, Ill).

The Chargers started the fourth quarter down, 7-5, but Sean Murphy (Pearl River, NY) netted a goal off the assist by Owen Smith III (Cornwall, NY) to bring DC within one.  With 10:34 to go in the game, freshman Alex Jones (St. Albert, AB) notched the game tying unassisted goal.

 Sophomore midfielder Remo Montalbano (Saugerties, NY) scored the game winner, coming from behind the goal and averting two defenders with 2:39 left in regulation. 

St. Michael’s had three opportunities to score after knocking the ball out of a DC’s players stick and moving the ball across the field into Dominican territory.  Two shots went just wide of the goal, while the other was just high of the goal.

Lazarus finished with three goals to lead the Knights, while Bryan Zaremba (Manhasset, NY) had two goals.  Mike Boerma (Concord, MA) led the team with two assists.

The Chargers were led by Murphy, Smith, and Jones who all had two goals a piece.  Murphy led the team with two assists.

Purple Knights goalie Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, MA) had nine saves in the loss.

DC goalie Joe Assante (Weston, NY) had 18 saves in the win.

With the win, Dominican improves to 5-7 on the year and set a new school record for wins in a season, while St. Michael’s falls to 8-6.

The Chargers are back in action tomorrow when they travel to #1 Mercyhurst College in East Coast Conference men’s lacrosse action.  Game time is slated for 1:30 pm.
