2012-2013 Dominican College Men’s Basketball Summary
The Dominican College men’s basketball team had an outstanding 2012-2013 season as they finished the year with an overall record of 22-7 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 15-3. DC won the CACC North Division Title and earned the program’s first NCAA East Regional Tournament berth.
Dominican also made their first appearances in the NCAA East Regional Polls and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Top 25 rankings. DC was ranked as high as fifth in the NCAA East Regional Poll and ranked as high as 20th in the country in the NABC Top 25 rankings. DC was also the first men’s program in the East Region to reach the 20-win plateau this season and had a season-high 10-game winning streak during the year.
The Chargers won their first CACC North Division Title since the league went to divisional play and earned the overall top seed for the CACC Tournament. In the tournament, Dominican faced off against the fourth-seed in the south division, Chestnut Hill College, in a quarter-final match up where the Chargers came away with the 91-85 victory. In a semi-final clash against the Philadelphia University Rams, the fifth-seed in the South Division, the Rams upset the Chargers, 71-68.
DC earned their first ever NCAA East Regional Tournament at-large bid and were seeded fifth in the regional. The team went up against the fourth-seed, University of New Haven, where UNH defeated Dominican, 73-66 to end their season.
Senior guard, Leon Porter, ranked 11th in the CACC with 15.5 ppg and fifth in free throw percentage (83.6%). He had 122 assists (4.2 apg), 1.3 steals and scored 449 points this season. He was selected as the All-Met Division II Co-Player of the Year and to the All-Met First Team, named to the All-CACC First Team for the second straight season and the NABC All-East Region Second Team. He finishes his career third on the Charger all-time scoring list with 1,777 points.
Center Cory Quimby finished fourth in the CACC in rebounds per game (9.3) and fifth in rebounds (270). He finished 20th in the country in rebounds and was 21st in double-doubles (21). For his efforts he was named to the All-CACC Second Team, the All-Met First Team and the Capital One Academic All-District ® First Team. He netted his 1,000th career point this season and finished his career with 1,187 points to place 17th on the Charger all-time scoring list. He also amassed 810 career rebounds to finish third all-time in DC history.
Head Coach, Joe Clinton, was named the CACC Coach of the Year for the fourth time and earned his second Clinton Met Writers Coach of the Year accolades.
Junior Johnathan Brown was named to the CACC All-Academic Team for his academic performance for the second consecutive season.
The team says good bye to six seniors this season: Porter, Quimby, Preston Smith, Gerald Hill, Tyler Stradford and Daniel Woods.
