2011-2012 Dominican College Men’s Basketball Summary
The Dominican College men’s basketball team finished their season with an overall record of 19-9 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 11-7.
The Chargers finished the regular season in second place in the CACC North Division and earned the North Division second seed in the CACC Tournament. In the tournament, Dominican faced off against the third seed in the south division, Chestnut Hill College, in a quarter-final match up where the Chargers came away with the 79-70 victory. In a semi-final clash against the top seed in the south, Goldey-Beacom College, the Chargers suffered a tough 72-66 overtime loss to end their season.
Junior captain and center Cory Quimby, ranked third among CACC scoring leaders at 18.1 points per game while adding 11.4 rebounds per contest, which also ranked second among NCAA national leaders. He was named the Central Atlantic Athletic Conference (CACC) Co-Player of the Year and received All-CACC First Team accolades. Quimby made his first appearance on the All-Met First Team after being named to the NABC First Team, the Daktronics East All-Region Second Team and was a first-team Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-Star choice. Quimby also finished in the top three nationally in double-doubles.
Guard, Leon Porter, also earned All-CACC First Team honors this season. He was second on the team in scoring (14.4 ppg) and led the team in both assists (139) and steals (41). He ranked 12th in the CACC in scoring, third in assists, 5th in free throw percentage, 12th in steals, 14th in three point field-goal percentage, 10th in three point field-goals made and 5th in assist/turnover ratio. He was also named to the All-Met Division II Men’s Basketball First Team and was selected as a ECAC All-Star as he was named to the Second Team.
Senior captain Michael Calzonetti and sophomore Johnathan Brown were named to the CACC All-Academic Team for their academic performance. Calzonetti also earned the team’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award at the DC Annual Awards Night, while junior Gerald Hill received the Coach’s Award. Guard Preston Smith was the recipient of the Annual Bobby Mulligan Scholarship.
DC loses one valuable member of the starting lineup in Calzonetti, but with the return of four starters and a strong nucleus of players, head coach Joe Clinton will look ahead to a successful 2012-2013 campaign.
