MEN'S BASKETBALL LOSE IN CACC SEMIFINALS
Caldwell, NJ (3/2/12) The Dominican College men's basketball team, the second seed in the north division, fell in overtime to Goldey-Beacom College, the top seed in the south division, 72-66 this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Semifinal game played at the George R. Newman Center on the campus of Caldwell College.
The victory allows Goldey-Beacom College to advance to the CACC Championship tomorrow afternoon against Bloomfield College, the top seed in the north division.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Chargers and ends their season with a 19-9 overall record.
A Johnathan Brown (Central Islip, NY) layup with 11:12 left in the first half gave the Chargers a 17-12 lead. A 13-0 run by the Lightning put GBC ahead 25-17 with under seven minutes to play.
Dominican answered back with 10 unanswered points to regain a lead of 27-25 and a three point play by CACC Co-Player of the Year, Cory Quimby* (Otisville, NY), closed out first half action with the Chargers leading, 32-29.
The Chargers led 46-41 with under eleven minutes remaining in regulation, but the Lightning came back with a 12-4 run to pull ahead 53-50 with just under five minutes to play. DC led 58-56 when a GBC layup with 1:15 on the clock tied the game. Dominican had a chance with two ticks left on the clock, but a missed layup forced the overtime period.
Guard Leon Porter II* (Laurel, MD) scored the first basket of overtime to give Dominican a two point lead and later hit a three point bucket with 1:31 to go to give the Chargers a 65-64 advantage, but Goldey-Beacom closed out the game going 8-8 from the charity stripe for the 72-66 victory.
Quimby led the Chargers with 24 points and nine rebounds. Porter finished with 20 points, while senior Michael Calzonetti* (Gloucester, NJ) netted six points and seven caroms in his final game.
