CHARGERS BASKETBALL RALLY TO DEFEAT HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (2/18/12) The Dominican College men's basketball team rallied from an early 20-7 first half deficit to defeat the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University, 72-61, this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game played on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. With the win, Dominican improves to 17-8 overall and 10-7 in the CACC.
Holy Family jumped out to a 20-7 lead with 11:25 remaining in the first half, when the Chargers answered back with a 20-7 run of their own to the score at 27-27 with just over a minute to play. A layup in the paint by center Cory Quimby* (Otisville, NY) with three ticks left on the clock put Dominican ahead 29-27 at the break.
A 9-1 spurt started things off for the Chargers in the second half, as guard Preston Smith (Mays Landing, NJ) hit back-to-back treys and put them ahead 38-28. The Tigers cut the lead to 38-34 with 15:14 to play, but Dominican broke it open with a 19-5 run over the next six minutes or so to go ahead by 18 points (57-39) and would lead by as many as 20 points twice in the final nine minutes en route to the 72-61 victory.
Guard Leon Porter II* (Laurel, MD) led all scorers with 21 points (4-7 from the three point arc) and a game leading seven assists. Quimby finished with the game's only double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, NY) added 12 points in the win.
Dominican closes out the regular season on Tuesday evening when they host Felician College in a CACC contest scheduled for 8pm on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
