CHARGERS BASKETBALL PICKED SECOND IN PRE-SEASON POLL

Orangeburg, NY (11/7/11) The Dominican College men's basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division as the CACC Pre-Season Poll was released today. The 13 head coaches conducted the voting. Bloomfield College earned the top spot in the North Division Poll, while Chestnut Hill College was chosen to win the South Division.

Orangeburg, NY (11/7/11) The Dominican College men's basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) North Division as the CACC Pre-Season Poll was released today. The 13 head coaches conducted the voting. Bloomfield College earned the top spot in the North Division Poll, while Chestnut Hill College was chosen to win the South Division.

Bloomfield is coming off one of the most successful seasons in conference history. The Deacons claimed conference regular-season and tournament championships, an East Region Championship and advanced to the NCAA Division II Elite 8. The Deacons became the first conference school to capture a regional championship. The season finally came to an end to the hands of BYU-Hawaii at the Elite 8 in Springfield, Mass. Gone is the conference and region Player of the Year in guard Gage Daye, however, nine players return for head coach Gerald Holmes, including senior point guard Ahmad Harris, who was named a preseason All-American by Sporting News Magazine in September. Harris was a third team All-CACC pick last season. Junior forward Matt Wafula is also back after averaging 12.0 points per-game last season.

Chestnut Hill garnered just one more point (69) than Philadelphia University (68) in the South Division poll and the Rams collected two more first place votes (seven to five). The Griffins, who went 12-16 last season and 8-9 in conference play, return four starters, including All-CACC second team pick, senior center Dan Comas. Comas averaged 16.2 points and 10.0 rebounds last season while blocking 32 shots. Senior guard Brandon Williams posted 11.9 points and 3.4 assists per-game as a junior. The Griffins advanced to the semi-finals of last season's CACC Tournament before falling to Bloomfield, 82-80.

Dominican College was selected second in the North Division with 71 points, just one point ahead of Post University. The Chargers garnered three first-place votes and return four of five starters from last season, including guards, junior Leon Porter (14.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg 5.1 apg) and the 2010-11 CACC Co-Rookie of the Year, Khaleev Ginyard (11.4 ppg). Junior forward Cory Quimby is back after posting 7.6 ppg, and senior Michael Calzonetti (5.2 ppg) also returns to the starting lineup.

Post was picked third in the North after going 17-11 last season and 14-4 in conference play under Al Sokaitis, who was voted the CACC Coach of the Year in his first season guiding the Eagles. Post returns leading scorer, Geraldo Fernandez, sixth man and CACC All-Tournament selection, Josh Lopez, along with part-time starters James Lee and Reggie Holding. Fernandez averaged 12.8 points per-game in 16 contests last season. Post advanced to the semi-finals of the 2010-11 CACC Tournament.

Philadelphia was selected second in the South Division poll with 68 points and seven first-place votes after going 15-12 overall last season and 10-7 in conference play. The Rams return second team All-Conference guard Jimmy Connolly and senior center Temi Adebayo, who was an All-CACC honorable mention last season. Connolly stood sixth in the conference in scoring (17.0) and led the league in free-throw percentage (.896) and three-point field-goals made per-game (2.96). Adebayo led the conference in blocks (4.21) and field-goal percentage (.576) and was 10^th in rebounds per-game (6.8).

The 2011-12 conference tournament will be hosted by Caldwell College this season on Friday and Saturday, March 2-3.
