MEN'S BASKETBALL DEFEAT WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (2/16/10) The Dominican College men's basketball team defeated the visiting Wildcats of Wilmington University, 67-61, this evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
Wilmington opened up the game with a 1-0 lead but a trey from CACC Rookie of the Week, Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) put Dominican up 3-1 and they would never relinquish the lead for the rest of the game. DC led by as many as 12 points 30-18 in the first stanza and went into the intermission with a 38-33 lead.
The Chargers had a 45-35 lead with just under 15 minutes left in regulation with a Wildcat run of 14-6 cut the deficit to 53-51 with 8:48 left. Once again traling by two, 59-57 with 3:17 remaining a 6-2 Charger run rebuilt a 65-59 advantage with 0:12 on the clock and they went on to the 67-61 victory.
Sophomore Brandon Savage (Philadelphia, PA) led four Wildcats in double figures with 17 points and seven rebounds. Antonio Sherrod (Glen Burnie, MD) netted 14 points, while Isiah Mason (Philadelphia, PA) and Vernon Dupree (Wilmington, DE) each had 10 points in the loss.
Dominican was led by Porter with 16 points and a game leading five assists. Junior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) netted 15 points, grabbed a career high 17 rebounds and had three blocks, while senior Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) tallied 11 points in the win.
With the victory Dominican improves to 12-14 overall and 8-7 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 8-15 overall and 5-8 in the CACC.
The Chargers return to action on Thursday when they host Post University in a CACC North Division game scheduled for 8pm on Coach Baxter Court.
