CHARGERS BASKETBALL DEFEAT CHESTNUT HILL COLLEGE GRIFFINS ON SENIOR DAY

Orangeburg, NY (2/21/09)  The Dominican College men's basketball team defeated the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College, 76-69 this afternoon on Senior Day at the Hennessy Center.

The first half was a close nit battle as CHC took a 11-5 lead with just over fifteen minutes to, but DC charged back with a 15-7 run to take a 20-19 lead with 9:26 left in the first half.  Both teams seesawed back and forth throughout the rest of the half, but a layup by junior Zach Huston (Johnson City, NY) with 0:05 seconds remaining gave DC a one point lead, 37-36 at the break.

The Chargers led most of the second half and led by as many as 15 points, 61-46, with 9:02 left in the game.  The Griffins then went on a 17-2 tear to take a 64-63 lead with 4:35 to go, but DC quickly regained a 65-64 lead on a layup by senior Henry Elegar (Bronx, NY).  CHC once again cut the lead to one, 70-69 with under a minute to go but Dominican held on for the 76-69 victory.

During halftime of the game the Chargers honored seniors Brandon Brock, Will Carty, Damien Davis, Elegar, Dato Sakvarelidze and Abdul Sulaiman.

Freshman Ryan Cook (Laurel, MD) led the Griffins with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Trenton Davidheiser (Pottstown, PA) netted 14 points and seven boards in the loss.

Carty led the Chargers with 17 points, shooting 50.0% from the floor and seven caroms.  Sulaiman and Brock each had seven points in the victory, while Davis grabbed seven rebounds.  Elegar and junior Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) each had eight points.

Dominican improved to 10-16 overall and 5-10 in the CACC, while Chestnut Hill College falls to 6-20 overall and 5-10 in the CACC.

DC is back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Caldwell College in CACC men's action.  Tip-off is slated for 8pm.
