CHARGERS BASKETBALL TURNS BACK WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY WILDCATS
Orangeburg, NY (2/7/09) The Dominican College men's basketball team turned back Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent, Wilmington University, 74-66, this afternoon in the 22nd Annual Bobby Mulligan Game held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
Wilmington University held a 27-20 lead with 5:26 left in the first half when Dominican went on a 17-4 run to close out the first half and take a 38-31 lead.
Dominican increased their lead to 41-33 early in the second half, but the Wildcats fought back to pull with in one, 53-54 with 9:01 remaining and went head, 55-54 on a layup by Antonio Sherrod (Glen Burnie, MD). A three point basket by senior Dato Sakvarelidze (Tblisi, GA) put Dominican back in the lead for good, 59-57, as they went on to the 74-66 victory.
Blake Rubenstein (Ambler, PA) and Allen Hairston (Plainfield, NJ) led the Wildcats with 13 points a piece, while Hairston had a team leading 13 rebounds. Sherrod finished with a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards.
Senior guard Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) led all scorers and five DC players in double-figures with 17 points and had eight rebounds. Senior Henry Elegar (Bronx, NY) netted 13 points and grabbed a game leading 14 rebounds, while Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) netted 11 points and five rebounds in the win. Junior Zach Huston (Johnson City, NY) had 10 points, along with senior Will Carty (Bronx, NY).
With the victory Dominican improves to 9-13 overall and 4-7 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 5-17 overall and 2-9 in the CACC.
For their efforts Elegar and Hairston were named the Most Valuable Players for each team in honor of the 22nd Annual Bobby Mulligan game.
Dominican is back in action on Tuesday when they host Bloomfield College in CACC action from Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Game time is set for 8pm.
