ADELPHI, DOMINICAN WIN ON NIGHT ONE OF DC TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT

Blauvelt, NY (11/16/07)  Adelphi University and host Dominican College won their opening round games in the 2007 DC Tip-Off Tournament held on Coach Baxter Court this evening.  Adelphi defeated Nyack College, 68-63 in game one, while Dominican knocked off Molloy College, 77-60.

In game one, Adelphi held a 35-31 lead at the half behind a 14 point performance from Chris Diasbarra (Mahopac, NY).  The Warriors came within a point late in the second half as senior Sheanan Martinez (Haverstraw, NY) hit a jumper to cut the Panther lead to 61-60, but Adelphi was able to pull out the 68-63 as Nyack was forced to foul and AU went 7-8 from the line in the final minute for the victory. 

Diasbarra led the Panthers with 23 points and three assists, while David Akinyooey (Elmont, NY) added 11 points and six rebounds in the win.  Richard Byrd (Central Islip, NY) contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

The Warriors were led by senior John Van Dunk (Hillburn, NY) with 13 points.  Valiant Jones (Los Angeles, CA) added eight points, while Martinez and Brian Roberts (Hartford, CT) each had seven points in the loss. 

In game two, Dominican jumped out to a 22-6 lead with 9:43 remaining in the first half as junior Dato Sakvarelidze (Tbilisi, GA) led the team with eight points and eight rebounds.  The Lions roared back to cut the lead to 31-27 at the break as senior Glen Martin (Brooklyn, NY) led the team with 11 points.

Dominican was hot again in the second half as they took a commanding 61-44 lead with 9:32 remaining in the game as junior Jonathan Guzman (Passaic, NJ) connected on a three point bucket en route to the 77-60 victory.

The Chargers were led by Sakvarelidze, who recorded his first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds.  Freshman Kresimar Knez (Astoria, NY) added 13 points, while guard James Mosser (Stanley, VA) had 12 points, shooting 4-6 from the three point line in the victory.  Junior transfer Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) had 10 points and four rebounds, while Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) contributed seven rebounds in the win.

Molloy was led by Martin who finished with 19 points.  Vincent Falzone (Middle Village, NY) added 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Brian Hutchinson (Elmont, NY) had 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss. 

With the wins Adelphi and Dominican improve to 1-0, while Molloy and Nyack fall to 0-1 on the year.

Tomorrow night at the Hennessy Center Molloy will take on Nyack at 6pm, while Adelphi and Dominican will face off in the final game of the DC Tip-Off Tournament at 8pm.
