CHARGERS WIN THRILLER OVER NYACK COLLEGE WARRIORS

Nyack, NY (1/17/08)  The visiting Dominican College Chargers won a thriller at Bowman Gymnasium in defeating Nyack College, 66-65 this evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's basketball action.

With the win the Chargers improve to 8-7 overall and 3-2 in the CACC, while the Warriors fall to 6-10 overall and 2-4 in conference play.

In a tough battle that saw eleven lead changes and six ties, DC finally pulled away for the win with 5:24 to go in the game as senior forward Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ) hit one of two free throws to pull ahead 57-56.  DC extended the lead to six, but the Warriors put together a 8-3 run to once again cut the deficit to one point, 67-66 with 0:49 left in the game.

After a Dominican turnover with 0:21 left in the game, Nyack inbounded the ball under the DC basket and brought it over half court where junior Will Carty (Bronx, NY) played stellar defense to keep ball away from the hoop and with the help of guard Damien Davis (Windsor, CT) was able to double team the ball.  The ball was knocked out of bounds by Dominican with 0:02 seconds on the clock and Nyack was never able to get off the winning shot as the Chargers came away with the thrilling 66-65 win in a packed Bowman Gymnasium.

Junior guard Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) led the Chargers with 20 points, while Gibbs added 13 points, shooting 4-6 from the charity stripe.  Freshman Kris Knez (Astoria, NY) netted 13 points and three caroms and Henry Elegar (Bronx, NY) added five points and three rebounds to give DC a combined 18 points and six rebounds off the bench in the win.

Nyack was led by Mickell Vickers who had the game's only double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The Chargers are back in action on Saturday when they host Philadelphia University on Coach Baxter Court in CACC men's basketball action at the Hennessy Center.  Game time is 3pm.
