Dominican, Queens Win Opening Rounds of Jim Clancy Memorial Tournament             

Blauvelt, NY (1/3/07)          The Dominican College Chargers defeated the Mercy College Flyers, 65-55 this evening in the opening round of the Jim Clancy Memorial Tournament held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.  The Chargers improved to 5-5 overall, while the Flyers dropped to 1-8.

DC held a 32-28 lead at the half, shooting 50% from the floor to Mercy's 45.8%.  Senior forward Prince Jackson (Schenectady, NY) led the Chargers with nine points and two blocks, while the Flyers were led by guard Chanze Wellington (Spring Valley, NY) also with nine points and two steals.

Dominican held a thirteen point lead with 4:32 left in the game of two made free throws by freshman point guard Kevin Buono (Suffern, NY).  The Flyers cut the lead to ten with four seconds to go on a dunk by freshman Vince Jordan (Spring Valley, NY).

The Chargers were led by Jackson with 19 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.  Junior Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ) netted 10 points and three steals, while sophomore Damien Davis (Windsor, CT) added eight points, four assists and four steals in the win.  Buono led the team with six assists.

Wellington led the Flyers with 18 points, while Keiron Guy (Brooklyn, NY) had the game's only double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  Jordan finished with 10 points in the loss.

In the first game of the night, the Knights of Queens College defeated the Deacons from Bloomfield College, 87-69 behind a 31 point and eight rebound performance from senior guard Bradd Wierzbicki (Maspeth, NY)Khaleef Allicott (Brooklyn, NY) and Hassan Washington (White Plains, NY) each had 19 points and combined for 11 assists.  Forward Marvin Lawrence (Uniondale, NY) contributed 10 points and six rebounds in the win.

The Deacons were led by senior guard Andre Dabney (Plainfield, NJ) with 28 points.  Sophomore Omari Knoxx (Brooklyn, NY) had 13 points and five rebounds, while Anthony Separovich (Sydney, Australia) added 11 points and seven rebounds.

With the win, Queens improved to 5-4 on the year, while Bloomfield dropped to 3-7.

Bloomfield College will play Mercy College tomorrow night at 6pm, while Dominican will take on Queens College at 8pm in the final round of the Jim Clancy Memorial Tournament on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
