DOMINICAN BASEBALL SWEEPS POST UNIVERSITY

Orangeburg, NY (4/8/09) The Dominican College baseball team swept at Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from the visiting Post University Eagles this afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Park. DC won the first game 10-2 and took the night cap, 4-3 in ten innings.
The Chargers pounded out 12 hits in game one and had a five run first inning en route to the 10-2 victory. A two run single to left field off the bat of right fielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) put the Chargers up 2-0 and the infield single by left fielder Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) scored a run to extent the lead to 3-0. DC added a run in the second and added three more in the third, as freshman Armando Alvarez (Miami, FL) had a two run triple to center field and came in to score a batter later on an Eagle error to give Dominican a dominating 9-1 lead.
A sacrifice fly ball by Alvarez brought in another Charger run as they went on to the 10-2 victory. Sophomore left handed pitcher Jack Crawford (Montgomery, NY) picked up the win in eight innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits. Freshman Shawn Negron (Pembroke Pine, FL) came in for the ninth to scatter just one hit.
In game two, DC scored two runs in the second on an RBI single to center field by catcher Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) and a sacrifice fly ball to right field by shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM). An RBI single up the middle in the third by junior Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) put Dominican ahead 3-0.
Post came back with a run in the fifth and added two runs in the seventh to force extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, Mortellaro tripled to left center and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop to complete the sweep as DC got the 4-3 victory.
Charger starter Shaun Murphy (Malville, NY) went five innings in the no decision, striking out five and scattering just three hits. Junior Todd Craig (Shenandoah, PA) picked up the win to improve to 3-2 in three innings of relief, striking out five and allowing just two hits.
With the victories Dominican improves to 19-9 overall and 9-5 in the CACC, while Post falls to 15-9 overall and 5-5 in the CACC.
