LATE INNING OFFENSE POWERS CHARGERS BASEBALL OVER C.W. POST

Orangeburg, NY (4/7/09) The Dominican College baseball team broke a 2-2 tie wide open with a seven-run ninth inning as they went on to beat host C.W. Post University, 9-2 this afternoon in non-conference baseball action.
The Pioneers took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning as they capitalized on DC errors. The Chargers got a run back in the third as junior Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) received a one out free pass and later scored on a wild pitch.
Dominican tied the game in the seventh on an RBI single up the middle off the bat of freshman Dave Perlleshi (Tuckahoe, NY). In the ninth Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) led off the inning with a double to right and came in to score on the double to right center by Armando Alvarez (Miami, FL). A fielder's choice by pinch hitter Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) scored a run and an RBI ground out by Maloney scored the third Charger run of the inning. A two-run single from outfielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) put Dominican up 7-2 and two more runs scored on a wild pitch and a balk as DC went on to the 9-2 victory.
Charger starter Victor Cosme (Brooklyn, NY) went seven innings in the no decision, allowing two runs on six hits and seven strikeouts. Freshman Cody Smith (Wales, WI) picked up the win in the final two innings as he didn't allow a hit and struck out two batters.
With the victory Dominican improves to 17-9 overall, while C.W. Post falls to 9-19.
DC is back in action tomorrow as they host Post University in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header slated to begin at 3pm at Veteran's Memorial Park.
