BASEBALL TAKES TWO FROM FRANKLIN PIERCE UNIVERSITY
Fort Lauderdale, FL (3/13/09) The Dominican College baseball team swept a non-conference double-header from Franklin Pierce University this afternoon, 1-0 and 9-2, at the Santaluces Sportsplex.
Fort Lauderdale, FL (3/13/09) The Dominican College baseball team swept a non-conference double-header from Franklin Pierce University this afternoon, 1-0 and 9-2, at the Santaluces Sportsplex.
The lone run game in the bottom of the seventh inning when sophomore Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) received a free one-out pass after being hit by the ball. Junior Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) laid down a sac bunt but the Ravens tried to get the lead runner out and both runners ended up being safe. A two out walk to freshman Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) loaded the bases and a first pitch passed ball allowed Iglesias to score and lift DC to the 1-0 victory.
Bonilla had both of the DC hits in the game and finished 2-3 with a walk.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Jack Crawford
(Montgomery, NY) threw a complete game, scattering just
one hit and five strikeouts in the 1-0 win. He had a
no-hitter going into the sixth inning when shortstop Jose
Macias (Bronx, NY) led off the inning with a single.
In game two, FPU tallied runs in the first and fifth innings, while DC scored a run in the second, three in the fifth, two in the sixth and added three more in the seventh for the 9-2 win.
A two out hit in the sixth by Bonilla and one by mann in the seventh each scored two runs to allow DC to break the game open.
Bonilla and Mann finished game two 2-3 with a double and 2 RBIs, while Yordis Veras (East Elmhurst, NY) was 2-4 with 2 RBIs and two runs scored.
Junior right-hander Todd Craig (Shenandoah, PA)
throw another complete game as the Chargers charged to a 9-2
victory. Craig compiled six strikeouts,
allowed two runs, one walk and nine hits in the win.
With the wins Dominican improves to 3-2 overall.
The Chargers are back in action tomorrow when they take on the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in a non-conference double-header slated to begin at 4pm at the Santaluces Sportsplex.
