BASEBALL LOSES TO UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS-LOWELL
RIVER HAWKS
Orangeburg, NY (4/30/08) The visiting River
Hawks of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell defeated the
Dominican College Chargers, 14-3 this afternoon in a non-conference
game at Veteran's Memorial Field. With the win the River
Hawks improve to 23-20 overall, while the Chargers fall to 23-22.
UMASS-Lowell opened up the game with a four run first inning. Anthony Santos (Chelmsford, MA) and Taylor von Kriegenbergh (Stoneham, MA) each had RBI singles, while Graeme Clohosey (Derr, NH) had a two out single through the right side to plate two River Hawk runners.
The Chargers got a run back in the second on a single to center field by shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) which scored first basemen Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY), who led off the inning with a single up the middle.
The River Hawks batted around the lineup in the third to score eight runs on six hits. Two runs scored on bases loaded walks to Tim Manton (Swansea, MA) and Peter Wolstenholme (Fall River, MA). A two out single to center field by Sean Burns (Colchester, VT) scored two runs followed by an RBI single to left by Tim Keene (Berlin, NH). Santos and Clohosey each had RBI singles for the other two runs.
DC scored to runs in the third as Robert Iglesias (May Landing, NJ) led off the inning with a double to right field and scored on a River Hawk fielding error which allowed CACC Rookie of the Week Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) to reach base. A double to left center by senior Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) brought Ryan in to score from first base and cut the lead to 12-3.
UMASS-Lowell added runs in the seventh on a wild pitch and added a run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly ball by Luke Wallace (Yorktown Heights, NY) for the final 14-3 victory.
Manton got the win (3-0) in six innings of work, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits.
Charger starter Anthony Luciano (Holtsville, NY) took the loss (2-1) in 2 2/3 innings, allowing 12 runs (10 earned) on eight hits and four strikeouts.
