CHARGERS CHARGE PAST BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE DEACONS

Orangeburg, NY (4/7/08) The Dominican College baseball team scored ten runs in the fifth inning as they went on to defeat the visiting Deacons of Bloomfield College 12-0 this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) baseball action this afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Field.

The Chargers scored a run in the bottom of the first as right fielder Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) led off the inning with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a passed ball.  freshman Dan Robinson's (Massapequa, NY) RBI ground out to second plated Brown and gave DC a 1-0 lead.

Dominican added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth, putting ten runs on the board. CACC Rookie of the Week, Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) received a one out free pass after getting hit and moved to second on the bunt single down the third base line by Robinson.  After a walk to sophomore Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) loaded the bases, designated hitter Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) single up the middle scored Ryan and Robinson.  After Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) walked to load the bases again, shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) hit a ball through the right side to plate Maloney and Mortellaro and extend the lead to 5-0.  A wild pitch brought in Mann and an RBI single through the left side scored Lopez from second base and gave DC a 7-0 lead.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Robinson's single up the middle scored two runs and Maloney followed with another 2 RBI hit, this time a double to center field to clear the bases and extend the lead to 11-0.

DC added a run in the sixth as a passed ball allowed Mann to come home after leading off the inning with a single to bring the lead to 12-0.

A run in the bottom of the eighth on the RBI single by Ryan was the final run for the Chargers.  In the top of the ninth, RBI singles by Jose Lebron (Hicksville, NY) and Anderson Minyetti (Jersey City, NJ) put the Deacons on the board en route to the final 13-2 score.

Charger starter Anthony Luciano (Holtsville, NY) got the win to improve to 2-0 overall, scattering four hits and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Junior Brendan Bohan (Rutherford, NJ) pitched the last two innings and allowed two runs on five hits and three strikeouts.

Deacon starter Edward Gryzeski (Manville, NJ) took the loss (1-2), allowing seven runs (six earned) on six hits and four strikeouts.

With the win the Chargers improve to 12-15 overall and 4-3 in the CACC, while the Deacons fall to 11-19 overall and 2-5 in conference play.

Dominican is back in action tomorrow when they travel to Felican College for a CACC baseball double-header.
