COUGARS DEFEAT CHARGERS BASEBALL
Orangeburg, NY (4/3/08) The visiting Cougars of Caldwell College defeated the Dominican College Chargers, 10-5 this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) baseball game at Veteran's Memorial Field.
The Cougars got scored two runs in the top of the second inning on one hit as Omar Velazquez (Flushing, NY) led off the inning by reaching base on a DC error. Catcher Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY) received a free pass to put two on and Gabriel Molina (Bronx, NY) singled to center field to score Velazquez. Chairappa came in to score on the sacrifice fly to right field by sophomore Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY) and give Caldwell a 2-0 lead.
Caldwell struck for five runs in the fifth as a DC error allowed Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL) to score after he reached base on a walk. Molina came up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double to right field to give the Cougars a 6-0 lead. Molina came in to score a batter later as Edgar Santos (Woodside, NY) singled to left field.
DC got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) hit a one out double to left field and sophomore Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) followed with an RBI double to right center.
The Chargers added two runs in the sixth as freshman Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) singled in third basemen Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) who led off the inning with a walk. Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) singled to right and came in to score on the RBI ground out by catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ).
CC added to their lead in the eighth as Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL) singled home Tommy Murphy (Monroe, NY) who led off the inning iwth a double to right center. Chiarappa hit a double to center field to score two runs and give Caldwell a 10-3 lead.
Dominican answered in the bottom stanza with two runs on a single to left by Robinson which plated Lopez and Phil Kramsky (Glendale, WI), who came in to catch in the top of the seventh, to cut the Cougar lead in half, 10-5.
Charger starter Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) suffered the loss (0-2) in 4 2/3 innings of work, allowing seven runs (none earned) on four hits and seven strikeouts . Cougar starter Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ) picked up his third win of the year in five innings, allowing just one run on six hits.
With the win Caldwell improves to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the CCC, while Dominican falls to 9-15 overall and 1-3 in the CACC.
Dominican is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host
Bloomfield College in CACC baseball action. First pitch is
slated for 3:30 pm at Veteran's Memorial Field.
