CHARGERS BASEBALL TURNS BACK QUEENS COLLEGE 

Blauvelt, NY (3/10/08)  The Dominican College baseball team turned back host Queens College, 12-6 this afternoon in a non-conference game held in Flushing, NY.

The Knights held a 2-0 lead going into the top of the fifth when freshman shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) singled to lead off the inning and moved over to second on a passed ball.  Catcher Marc Mortellaro (Middletown,NY) and Lopez advanced to third on another passed ball.  Designated hitter Phil Kramsky (Glendale, WI) hit an RBI single to score LopezMortellaro scored on a fielder's choice by outfielder Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY)Berrios later stole second, moved to third on an error by the catcher and scored on an RBI single by Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) to put DC ahead 3-2.

Queens came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth when Denny Gonzalez (Sabana Grande, PR) hit an RBI double to score Jovan Santos (Queens, NY) who led off the inning with a walk.  

Dominican exploded for nine runs on four hits and two Knights errors in the top of the eighth to take 12-3 lead.  Senior Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) led off the inning with a walk and later scored after Lopez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  Mortellaro cleared the bases with a 3RBI triple and game in to score on a second RBI single by Kramsky.  Later in the inning, sophomore Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) hit the second three run triple of the inning for DC and later scored on an error by the catcher.

QC added three runs in the top of the ninth for the final 12-6 victory.  Santos reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on an RBI single by Gonzalez.  With two outs, Carlos Suarez (New York, NY) and Justin McKey (Albany, NY) hit back to back RBI doubles for the final two Knight runs.

Dominican starter Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) picked up the win ( 1-1) after going four innings, allowing three runs on five hits and eight strikeouts.  Reliever Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) pitched the final five innings, allowing three runs on five hits and striking out seven Knight hitters.

With the win the Chargers improve to 2-2 on the year, while the Knights fall to 1-4.

Dominican is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to C.W. Post University.  Game time is set for 3pm.
