CHARGERS BASEBALL GETS FIRST VICTORY OF SEASON OVER DOWLING COLLEGE

Brookhaven, NY- Kevin Reese (Ronkonkoma, NY) led the Golden Lions today going 2 for 3, however, it was not enough as Dowling falls to the Chargers of Dominican 3-1.  The Golden Lions fall to 5-2 as the Chargers improve to 1-2.

Dowling had the first opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 2nd when Colin Barnathan (Massapequa, NY) hit a 1 out double to put himself into scoring position.  Matt Monastero (Rigde, NY) followed with a single to left, but Charger leftfielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY)  gunned down Barnathan at the plate for the second out of the inning.   The Chargers got out of the inning after a walk and a fielder's choice. 

In the top of the 3rd, Dominican answered following a Robinson walk and two infield outs, Willie Mann (Paterson, NY)  hit an infield single to send Robinson home giving the Chargers a 1-0 lead.  In the top of the 4th pitcher Kevin McCormack (Islip, NY) walked the leadoff batter Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) and surrendered an RBI double to Drew Dombkowski (Southampton, MA) to put Dominican up 2-0.  Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) came up with 1 out and cracked an RBI single up the middle rounding out Dominican's scoring giving them a 3-0 lead.

Relief pitchers Dan Kalbfliesh (Johnsonville, NY), Joe Trainor (Massapequa, NY), and Justin Brooks (West Sand Lake, NY) held the Chargers scoreless to give the Golden Lions a chance in the bottom of the 9th.  Catcher, Dave Wendt (Methuen, MA) led off the 9th with the a walk and with two outs moved to second on a fielder's choice and a wide throw by the Dominican shortstop hit by Dan Pembroke (Wading River, NY) putting runners on 1st and 2nd. Ralph Tufano (Staten Island, NY) hit a single down the left field line plating Wendt making the score 3-1.  That would be all of the scoring as pinch hitter Henry Fuentes (Brooklyn, NY) grounded out with two runners on to end the game.

McCormack
earns the loss going 5 innings, surrendering all 3 Dominican runs, 4 hits and 7 strikeouts.

Freshman DJ Stinsman (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) earned his first collegiate win in five innings of work, allowing six hits and no runs.

The Chargers are back in action on Monday when they travel to Queens College.  Game time is set for 3:30 pm.
