CHARGERS BASEBALL LOSES TO ADELPHI UNIVERSITY
Garden City, NY (3/4/08) The Chargers baseball team dropped their second straight game to host Adelphi University Panthers, 3-2 this afternoon at Bonomo Memmorial Field in Garden City, NY.
Dominican scored two runs in the first stanza as Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) led off the game with a single followed by a hits batsman to put runners on first and second with nobody out. After a fielder's choice and a fly out, sophomore Willie Mann (Paterson, NY) hit an RBI single. A two base error by the AU catcher allowed Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY), who reached on a fielder's choice, to come around to score the unearned run to give DC a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when Robert Paccione (Bayside, NY) led off the inning with a bunt single. After stealing second, he moved over to third on a passed ball with one out. Mike Testani (Willston Park, NY) hit an RBI sacrifice fly ball to center to score Paccione and cut the Charger lead to 2-1.
AU scored again in the sixth when Rob DeGennaro (Hicksville, NY) walked and stole second base to lead off the inning. Mike Colonna (Staten Island, NY) singled and advanced to second on an error by the DC shortstop which allowed DeGennaro to score and knot the game at 2-2.
Adelphi went ahead in the bottom of the eighth when junior Bil Melillo (Glenwood Landings, NY) reached first base on a bunt single and advanced to third on a throw after DeGennaro reached base by an error on a bunt and moved to second on a throw. Paccione singled which allowed Melillo scored the unearned run and give AU a 3-2 lead and eventually the victory.
Freshman pitcher Keith Couch (Elmont, NY) went six innings, allowing two runs on three hits and five strikeouts. Junior Jake Potters (Long Beach, NY) picked up the win in three innings of relief, allowing only one Charger hit and two strikeouts.
Charger starter Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) went six innings in his first start of the year, allowing two runs on three hits and five strikeouts. Senior Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) suffered the loss (0-1) in two innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and three strikeouts.
With the win Adelphi improves to 1-4 on the year, while Dominican falls to 0-2 on the season.
Dominican is back in action tomorrow afternoon when they travel
to Dowling College. Game time is set for 3pm.
