BASEBALL OPENS SEASON WITH LOSS TO MOLLOY
Yaphank, NY (3/2/08) The Dominican College baseball team lost their season opener to host Molloy College, 9-6 this afternoon in a non-conference game at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank, NY.
Tied 1-1 after the first inning, Dominican took the lead in the top of the second when Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and was moved over to third on a walk. After a DC batter was hit to load the bases, sophomore Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) walked to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead. The lead would be short lived as the Lions scored two runs one a hit and an error to take a 3-1 lead.
Dominican scored four runs in the top of the fourth on a one out 2RBI double down the left field line by senior Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY). Maloney's ground out scored another run, followed by a two out home run to right field by freshman Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY). Molloy once again followed suit with four runs in the bottom stanza.
Robert LaRusso (Bayside, NY) homered to left field to lead off the inning and with runners at the corners and one out, T.J. Greig (Staten Island, NY) had an RBI single to center field. A DC error led to the other two Lions runs and a 7-6 Molloy lead after four innings of play.
The Lions added a run in the sixth and one in the eighth for the final 9-6 victory. Sophomore Eric Williams (Stanford, CT) picked up the win in 3 2/3 innings of work. Junior Patrick Walsh (Bellmore, NY) went 2-4 in the game with 2 RBIs and two runs scored. Nolan Kucich (Manhasset, NY) scored three runs in the win.
Senior Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) suffered the loss in 4.0 innings pitched, allowing seven runs on five hits and three walks. Freshman Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, NY) pitched the final four innings allowing two runs on three hits and striking out four batters. Brown finished with two hits, two runs and two RBIs.
The Chargers are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Adelphi University in a non-conference game, slated to begin at 3pm.
