Smithfield, RI (4/28/07) The Bryant baseball team, ranked fifth in the Northeast region, split a non-conference doubleheader with regional rival Dominican College Saturday afternoon, winning 6-2 and losing 5-3.
In the first game, Eric Loh (Old Greenwich, CT) took a perfect game into the sixth inning, earning his fifth win of the season. Eric Polvani (Wallingford, CT) pitched the final 2.1 innings to pick up his second save.
Dominican got on the board in the sixth as Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) singled to center field and advanced to second on another single by Jose Made (Binghamton, NY). He came in to score on a Bryant error. In the seventh, Ed Dolan (Cliffside Park, NJ) led off the inning with a single and later scored on an RBI single by Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA).
The Bulldogs scored three second-inning runs as RF Taylor Ferguson (Charlton, Mass.) continued his hot hitting, doubling home two with two outs.
Ferguson drove home two again in the sixth with a two-out single, giving him four RBIs in the game out of the lead-off spot.
2B Dave Muscatello (Hopkinton, Mass.) had three hits, while DH Jeff Vigurs (South Windsor, CT) and 3B Dylan Stone (Portsmouth, RI) had two hits each.
In the second game, Chargers starter Matt Dilgen (Staten Island, NY) (3-1) allowed just one run in 7.1 innings, while throwing over 125 pitches.
LF Tom Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) homered and doubled, and drove home three runs in the victory for the Chargers.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the eighth when CF Nick Campbell (Raynham, Mass.) singled home Ferguson.
Trailing 5-1 in the ninth, Bryant got the go-ahead run on base after Ferguson doubled home McKenna and Muscatello when he lined a ball off the wall in right. Alexander then worked out a walk after a nine pitch at-bat and Campbell walked on four pitches to load the bases. The Chargers brought in Andrew Saccone (Warwick, NY) to face 1B Mike Rocco (Tewksbury, Mass.) who struck out looking to end the ballgame.
Bulldog starter Brent Almeida (Fairhaven, Mass.) took the loss, falling to 4-5 on the season. He allowed four runs (three earned) in six innings, while striking out six.
