Caldwell Cougars Defeat Dominican Baseball, 16-9 

Blauvelt, NY (4/11/07)   The Dominican College baseball team dropped a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game to visiting Caldwell College, 16-9 this afternoon at Veteran’s Memorial Field.  With the win, Caldwell improves to 13-6 overall and 5-1 in the CACC, while Dominican falls to 9-8 overall and 3-2 in CACC play.

The game was tied at 3-3 until the sixth when the Cougars exploded for five runs off Charger starter Joe Catanese (Huntington, NY).  The first run came off a solo home run by designated hitter Jorge Torres (Coral Springs, FL).  The following three Cougar batters got on base to set up a grand slam homer for freshman Doug Hilgenberg (Flemington, NJ) to take a 8-3 lead.   

Caldwell added another five runs in the seventh to extend their lead to 13-3 as Chris Chiarappa (Elmont, NY) had a two RBI double, followed by an RBI single by Jon Irwin (Mahopac, NY) and an RBI double by Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY).

The Cougars scored three more runs in the eighth on back to back hits, another two RBI double by  Chiarappa and an RBI single by Hilgenberg as Caldwell took a commanding 16-3 lead. 

The Chargers rallied for six runs in the bottom of the ninth as sophomore Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence, followed by back-to-back singles by Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA) and Nelson Cruz (East Elmhurst, NY).  Brian Smith (Stony Point, NY) hit an RBI single and freshman Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) had a bases clearing triple to center field to bring the score to the eventual final of 16-9.

Caldwell starter Eric Hines (Milltown, NJ) picked up the win, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing seven hits and striking out five hitters. 

Charger starter Catanese got the loss, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing eight runs on seven hits and striking out 10 Cougars to drop his record to 2-3 on the year.

DC is back in action tomorrow in a non-conference game against St. Thomas Aquinas College.  Game time is slated for 3:30 pm.
