Dominican Baseball Splits Double Header With Wilmington College To Earn Top Seed In Upcoming CACC Tournament
Blauvelt, NY (5/6/06) The Dominican College baseball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header with Wilmington College this afternoon at Veteran's Memorial Park. DC took the first game, 5-3 to clinch the CACC Regular Season Title and give them the top seed in the upcoming CACC Tournament.
The Chargers got on the board in the first game in the bottom of the second inning as junior catcher Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) singled to led off the inning, followed by Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY) who reached base on a fielder's choice as WC got Gilardo out. Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA) hit an RBI triple to score Escalera and give DC a 1-0 lead. Senior Chad Duesler (Northville, NY) then hit an RBI single to score Keegan and extend the lead to 2-0.
Dominican added to the lead in the third as Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) reached base on a Wilmington error, advanced to second on a ground out and came in to score on the RBI single by Gilardo.
DC added two more runs in the fourth and fifth innings off RBI singles by Made and Escalera to give the Chargers a 5-1 lead.
Wilmington added two runs in the sixth and seventh innings as Edgar Rivera hit an RBI single in the sixth and Garry Wright hit an RBI double in the seventh for the final 5-3 score.
Dominican starter Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) improved to 8-1 on the year, going 5.2 innings with five hits and three strikeouts.
Wilmington starter Bret Urban suffered the loss, going 3 innings with five hits and three runs.
In the night cap, Wilmington took control of the game early scoring two runs in the first and exploding for four runs in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. They added three more runs in the fifth to take a commanding 9-0 lead.
The Chargers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth as sophomore Joe Kubanik (Stony Point, NY) tripled with one out, followed by an RBI ground out to second by Frank Maynard, Jr (Brooklyn, NY) to make the score 9-1.
Wilmington catcher Matt Gianni led the Wildcats in the game going 2-4, including a double, and scoring two runs with a game leading three RBIs. Chase Barnes also went 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored in the win. Brian Testa and Jason Rogers each had two hits for Wilmington.
Wilmington starter Kenny McGrady improved to 9-1 on the year, going three innings and allowing one one hit.
DC starter Joseph Catanese (Huntington, NY) suffered the loss to drop his record to 5-2 on the year, going 3.1 innings and allowing six runs on six hits.
The Chargers are back in action this Thursday as they are the #1
seed in the CACC Tournament to be played in Wilmington, DE.
