Blauvelt, NY (3/22/06) Keith Gebert (Brooklyn, NY)got the game winning RBI single in the bottom of the thirteenth inning, scoring pinch runner Frank Maynard (Brooklyn, NY) to push the Dominican College Chargers past Post University, 10-9 in the season’s home opener at Dominican College.
Dominican jumped out to a 1-0 led in the bottom of the first after left fielder Mike Zani (Goshen, NY) led off the game with a single and stole second and third. He scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Gebert. The Chargers added three runs in the third as Eliezer Nunez (Brooklyn, NY) hit a two run double, scoring Alex O’Connell () and Zani. He scored on another sacrifice fly by Gebert to take a 4-0 lead.
The Eagles fought back in the fourth, scoring three runs to pull within one. Chris Ouelette (Uncasville, CT) led off the inning with a single and Jordan Klein (Comack, NY)) got a two out walk. Both would score on a single followed by a two base error, allowing Eric Rovinetti (Watertown, CT) to advance all the way to third. Matt Smolley (Wolcott, CT) followed with an RBI single to make the score 4-3.
The Chargers answered back with three runs in the fifth after shortstop Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) got a one out single and advanced to second on an error. Zani got an RBI single to score Made and then stole second and third. Zani scored on Nunez’s RBI single and Gebert followed with another RBI single to score Nunez to take a 7-3 lead.
Post University tacked on three runs in the top of the sixth as Unger (Great Neck, NY) was hit by a pitch to led off the inning. DiMania (Schenectady, CT) followed with a walk and Klein followed with a single. Rovinetti hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Unger and DiMania would later score on a wild pitch. The last Eagle run of the inning would come off the bat of Gelalich (Arcadia, CA) as he hit an RBI single to score Klein.
The Eagles took the lead in the top of the eighth, 8-7, after Rovinetti got a one out single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Matt Rheault (Agawam, MA) singled to right field, scoring Rovinetti and Ryan Depolo (Milford, CT) had a sacrifice fly, scoring Smolley.
DC tied it with a run in the bottom of the eighth after Made got a one out triple to center field and scored on Zani’s ground out to second base to make the score 9-9. Post took the lead in the top of the tenth as Rheault got on base on an error and later scored on the sacrifice fly by Ouelette to go up 9-8. The Chargers answered back in the bottom of the tenth as senior Chad Duesler (Northville, NY) had an RBI single to center field, scoring Joe Kubanik (Stony Point, NY) who had a two out walk to once again tie the game at 9-9.
In the bottom of the thirteenth inning, Zani reached base on a Post error and Maynard went in to run at first base. He later stole second and scored on Gebert’s single to left field for the Charger victory, 10-9. Pitcher Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) got the win, going 7 1/3 innings.
The Chargers are back in action tomorrow when they travel to
Adelphi University at 3pm.
