Chargers Sweep Virginia State University to Start off Season 2-0
Petersburg, VA (2/25/06) The Dominican College baseball team began the 2006 season with a double-header sweep over host Virgina State University today winning, 17-4 and 12-1.
In the first game, the Chargers pounded VSU for 10 runs in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Joe Kubanik (Stony Point, NY) doubled in two runs, followed by an RBI single by senior Chad Duesler (Northville, NY). Two batters later Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) and Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) doubled hit back to back doubles for four RBIs. After another Charger walk, Mike Zani (Goshen, NY) hit the fourth double of the inning and giving the team another two runs.
Through the remaining four innings, Dominican tacked on another seven runs while VSU fought back for four runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Pitcher Matt Dilgen(Staten Island, NY) got the win, going 3.2 innings with five strike outs. Daniel Bucci (Dobbs Ferry, NY) went 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and two strikeouts. Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, PA)pitched the seventh inning, striking out one batter.
In the second game, DC jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three, but exploded in the fourth with five runs. The inning started off with back to back singles from Brown and Made. After two VSU errors, Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY) singled in two runs.
The Chargers scored three runs in the sixth inning and added another run in the seventh for the final 12-1 score.
Pitcher Todd Spindler (Chesapeake, VA) pitched five innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven. Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) pitched a hitless sixth inning, striking out two, while Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) finished off the game, striking out all three hitters.
