SECOND HALF COMEBACK FALLS SHORT AS LADY CHARGERS DROP SEASON OPENER TO SETTERS
Garden City, N. Y. (11/14/25) The Dominican University New York women's basketball team dropped their season opener to the Setters of Pace University who edged the Lady Chargers by a score of 68-65.
In the first of two games this weekend at the Adelphi University Conference Challenge, the Lady Chargers trailed by as many as 17 points in the second half and saw their comeback fall just short.
Dominican begins the season 0-1 overall while the Setters get their first win of the season.
The Setters took a double digit lead into halftime and opened the third quarter on an 8-2 run to extend to their largest lead of the game.
Dominican cut the deficit back to 11 points after putting up a 24-point third quarter.
The Lady Chargers cut the deficit back to single digits early on in the fourth quarter. DU used a 10-2 run down the stretch of the fourth quarter and cut the Pace lead to 67-65 after back to back steals by freshman Ketura Rutty.
Dominican outscored the Setters 24-16 in the final frame but their comeback fell short.
Rutty and senior Cayla Howard finished with a combined 44 points. Rutty led all scorers with 23 points including 10 points in the fourth quarter going 10-15 from the field and picked up four steals.
Howard scored 21 points on 9-16 from the field and went a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line. Howard led the way in rebounds with seven and picked up four blocks.
Junior Tamia Nunes scored 10 points while dishing out a team-high six assists and pulled down four boards.
The Lady Chargers return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on Adelphi University at 1:00 PM.
