Caldwell, N.J. (9/17/25) The Dominican University New York men's soccer team edged the Cougars of Caldwell University this afternoon 2-1 in the CACC opener.
Sophomore forward Matheus Xavier netted the game winner in the 87th minute to secure the first win of the season and first conference win for the Chargers.
Goalkeeper David Arteaga recorded his first win of the season in net for the Chargers and recorded four saves.
The Cougars goalkeeper, Justin Talbot, made seven saves but suffered the loss.
The Chargers jumped in front 1-0 after Eyob McFarland scored the game's first goal in the 23rd minute. Xavier assisted on the DU opening goal.
The score remained 1-0 until the middle of the second half in the 73rd minute when Hakon Rake tied the game after a double assist by Justin Talbot and Emilio Segovia.
Later in the second half, as the final minutes were ticking down, Xavier took a pass from Jackson Martinez and connected for the game winning goal in the 87th minute to lift the Chargers over the Cougars.
Shots in the game were locked at 14 a piece and the Cougars held the edge in corner kicks 2-1.
The Chargers return home this Saturday when they host the Wildcats of Wilmington University at 2:30 PM on O'Brien Field.
