WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL TURNS BACK UNIVERSITY OF THE SCIENCES IN DIG PINK GAME
Orangeburg, NY (10/10/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team turned back the visiting Devils from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22) this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action from the Hennessy Center as the Lady Chargers hosted their "Dig Pink" Game.
Orangeburg, NY (10/10/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team turned back the visiting Devils from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, 3-1 (25-16, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22) this afternoon in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action from the Hennessy Center as the Lady Chargers hosted their "Dig Pink" Game.
Dominican jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set and quickly extended their lead to 18-12. The Lady Chargers closed out the first set with an 7-4 run for the 25-16 victory.
Tied 13-13 in the second set, DC exploded for a 12-4 run as freshman Jordyn Fuller (Keller, TX) tallied five service points to take a 2-0 match lead with a 25-17 victory.
The Devils rallied in the third set, scoring the first five points and built up a 17-10 lead en route to the 25-22 set win to cut the match deficit to 2-1.
The fourth set was tight early on as the Devils had a one point advantage at 9-8. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Klimas (Thornwood, NY) went on a serving run of eight points to put Dominican ahead 15-10. USP fought back to tie the set at 20-20, but a serving error and a Dominican kill put them up 22-20 as they went on for the 25-22 set win and 3-1 match victory.
The Devils were led by junior Christine Puschak (Leola, PA) who had a match leading 16 kills. Fellow junior Cady Rich (Shelton, CT) had 10 kills, while setter Sarah Hickman (Newark, DE) had 32 assists.
Dominican was led by freshman Kristen Loney (Pine Bush, NY) who had 12 kills. Klimas finished with nine kills and five service aces, while freshman Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) also tallied nine kills. Setter Whitney Ranger (Ventura, CA) had a match leading 34 assists to go along with eight kills and seven defensive digs. Libero Catherine Giordano (Stony Point, NY) and freshman N'Jameh Philip (Monroe, NY) led the team with eight defensive digs a piece.
With the victory Dominican improves to 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the CACC, while USP falls to 6-7 overall and 6-4 in the CACC.
The Lady Chargers raised $2,050.00 in donations to contribute to the "Dig Pink" initiative. Dig Pink is a Breast Cancer Awareness Rally being held during October in order to raise awareness and funds. This season, 262 college teams are among the 731 teams participating in the event. The Foundation has set a goal of $700,000 for the 2009 fund raising effort.
Dominican is back in action on Tuesday when they host Concordia College in CACC volleyball action from the Hennessy Center.
