WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL WINS THRILLER OVER NYIT
Orangeburg, NY (9/24/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team rallied after losing the first set to defeat the visiting Bears from the New York Institute of Technology, 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-21, 15-8) this evening in a non-conference match on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
Orangeburg, NY (9/24/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team rallied after losing the first set to defeat the visiting Bears from the New York Institute of Technology, 3-2 (21-25, 27-25, 28-26, 25-21, 15-8) this evening in a non-conference match on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
The Bears never trailed in the first set, including a 7-4 run to build up a 20-14 lead and never looked back for the 25-21 set one win.
The second set was a battle as neither team led by more than three points. Tied at 25-25, junior Catherine Giordano (Stony Point, NY) had a service ace to put DC one point away from the win. An NYIT attack error on the next volley gave Dominican the 27-25 victory and tied the match at 1-1.
The third set saw the Lady Chargers build up a 16-10 lead, but the Bears rallied with an 11-5 to knot the set at 21-21. NYIT had a 24-22 lead, but a service error regained the serve for DC and cut the lead to 24-23. A big kill from junior Kerianne Dudley (Nanuet, NY) re-tied the set, but attack errors by both teams saw the set tied once again at 26-26. A Bear attack error put DC one point away from victory and setter Whitney Ranger (Ventura, CA) closed out the set with a service ace for the 28-26 set win and put Dominican up 2-1.
Like the first set, the Bears never trailed in set four as they opened up with an 8-3 lead en route to the 25-21 set win to tie the match at 2-2.
In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Chargers jumped out to a 5-1 lead and extended their lead to 8-4. Two straight kills from NYIT cut the lead to 8-6, but two kills and a Bear attack error regained an 11-6 advantage for DC as they went on to the 15-8 fifth set win and 3-2 match victory.
Tugce Sidas (Istanbul, Turkey) led NYIT with 15 kills, while Shelby Klein (Orange, CA) added 14 kills and Ali Falbo (Costa Mesa, CA) contributed 12 kills in the loss. Setter Emily Syers (East Meadow, NY) tallied a match leading 48 assists, while libero Lisa Peacock (Lindenhurst, NY) had a team leading 25 defensive digs.
Dominican was led by freshman outside hitter Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) who led all attackers with a career high 25 kills and 26 digs. Freshman Kristen Loney (Pine Bush, NY) added eight kills, while setter Ranger had 45 assists.
With the victory Dominican improves to 10-6 overall, while NYIT falls to 5-9.
Dominican is back in action on Saturday when they host Holy Family University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Coach Baxter Court. Game time is 12pm.
