New Castle, DE (10/18/08) The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University ended a five game losing streak, as they knocked of the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 3-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.
Neither team could get much going in the first half, and the squads entered halftime tied at zero. The action picked up in the second half and came in bunches.
Dominican struck first, as Christina Evans (Mahopac, NY) connected on a pass from Angela Correia (Elizabeth,NJ), scoring from 15 yards out and giving the Chargers a quick 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the half. The Wildcats would even the score at one, just two minutes later, when freshman midfielder Angelica Appold buried a pass from sophomore Sam Simpson. It wouldn't be long before the ‘Cats struck again, as freshman defender Kory Webster netted an unassisted goal at the 51 minute mark, giving the hosts the 2-1 lead.
The 2-1 advantage for Wilmington would hold for most of the second half, but sophomore forward Kirsten Stallone gave the Wildcats some insurance when she tallied an unassisted goal with a little over six minutes to play. Dominican would answer right back when Jennifer Joyce scored just a minute later, but it would prove to be too little too late, as the ‘Cats held on for the all important conference victory.
Wilmington's sophomore goalkeeper Kendra Ness recorded five saves in net, while the Chargers' Valentina Sturchio (Stewartsville, NJ) turned away 10 shots. The Wildcats out-shot Dominican by a 23-9 margin, and also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
With the win Wilmington improved to 3-4-1 in the CACC and 4-9-2 overall, while Dominican dropped to 3-5-1 in the conference and 4-10-1 on the season.
