Winter Haven, Fla. (2/28/26) The Dominican University New York softball team opened up the 2026 season with two losses to Slippery Rock Univeristy in games played today at THE Spring Games. SRU won the first game, 14-8 and took the night cap, 9-1 in five innings.
Following the games, the Lady Chargers are now 0-2 on the season.
Game One: SRU led 8-0 after an inning and a half, but the Lady Chargers scored four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the deficit in half, 8-4. Sophomore Victoria Iorio got DUNY on the board with an RBI single to right field and two batters laters shortstop Gianna Longo produced a two-out run-scoring single to left field. Left fielder Emily Angulo hit a two-run single to left field to get the Lady Chargers pack into the game.
The Rock scored runs in the fourth and fifth frames to increase their lead to 10-4, but Dominican countered with a run in the fifth on the RBI groundout by Iorio and followed with a two-run single by Deja Robinson in the sixth to make the score 10-7.
SRU scored four runs in the top of the seventh for a 14-7 lead and in their final at-bat the Lady Chargers scored a run on the RBI doule off the bat of Kindel Johnson for the 14-8 final.
Johnson went 4-5 in the game, while Angulo, Robinson and Layla Albarran had two hits a-piece in the loss.
Reliever Gianna Barbieri took the loss in two innings pitched.
Game Two: The Rock led 8-0 after two innings of play, but Dominican got on the board with a run in the top of the third as Adrianna DeValerio scored on a passed ball.
SRU added a run in the bottom of the fourth for the 9-1 win.
Victorio Iorio suffered the loss for the Lady Chargers in two innings of work.
Dominican returns to action tomorrow at The Spring Games when they take on Saint Anselm College and Seton Hill University.
